NEST Install

“Where has this type of product been ?” was what the clients said when  we introduced them to their new NEST thermostat.

We agree that the NEST learning thermostat is special. It is easy to use and learns from you; which makes it unique. The client we met this morning received their NEST as a gift from their son (great gift !). We explained how the NEST works and showed them a video on how it works. They liked it so much that they ordered a second one for their cape house in the first 10 minutes during the install.

As you can see from the pictures, we used the large plate that comes with the NEST because the client didn’t mind how it looks. We could have also installed just the NEST; which will involve a little patching and paint after the install.

The product is currently out of stock on the NEST web-store. BGB has half dozen available within a week. We will install the NEST and give you a tutorial on how it works and how to use it.

If you would like to learn more about the nest, you can start on their website and then email us with your order and preferred installation dates.

Meet the brain behind the new BGB Blog

As some of you might have realized, the BGB Blog underwent a major revamp in May 2011.  Our blog which has been up since June 2008, had a total of 7,122 hits until May 2011. The content was being created by interns and was mostly a mix of “green” news and product showcases.

Our intention behind the revamp was to increase readership and connect with our readers by telling the story behind every project.  We wanted our readers to know how we did what we did.  This completely transparent approach, and the fact that the blog content is now created by  John Hourihan (Director of Pre-Construction and Operations) who has 15 years of experience in construction has almost doubled our readership in the last 6 months. We update the blog 2-3 times a week, give our readers a mix of project updates, green news in the Boston area and introduce them to our family of architects, subs and employees.

The blog was featured in November’s issue of Remodeling magazine, in an interview of John Hourihan by senior editor Nina Patel. Read the article here.

NEST

Nest is the name of the company that could have made the coolest SMART Thermostat yet.

10% of all U.S. energy is controlled by thermostats; as much as the refrigerator, lighting, TVs, computers and stereos combined. That’s the equivalent of 1.7 billion barrels of oil per year. But in most homes the thermostat is an unassuming beige box. It doesn’t matter if it’s a manual or complicated programmable thermostat, we do with it what we’ve always done: get up, walk over to it, and change the temperature. Every few hours. Every day. 1,500 times a year.
We still try to save energy, of course. We turn down the thermostat when we can, we don’t set it too high or low. But we’re human. We forget. Until we see our energy bills. But the problem is, virtually everyone with a programmable thermostat doesn’t set or use it properly. Nest Labs, a Palo Alto-based start-up, aims to solve this problem with a new thermostat that’s simple, sleek, intuitive, and smart.
Tony Fadell, a former Apple executive and founder of Nest Labs, said, “We’ve built the world’s first learning thermostat — a thermostat for the iPhone generation,” according to the New York Times. It’s called Nest, and it’s going to be sold for $250. Pre-orders are being taken now:

Nest learns by remembering temperature adjustments entered over time. It creates a custom schedule from adjustments or can be manually programmed for seven days with 20 set points per day. Nest shows a leaf when you’re saving energy and displays the time it will take to arrive at a certain temperature. Nest also has an auto-away mode and can be adjusted remotely through a laptop or mobile phone.

Everyone remembers their parents old bubble thermostat. Well the new kid on the block has put a new spin on a look we all recognize as a thermostat.
The next-generation thermostat is constructed with a brushed stainless steel ring, a built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery, and an LCD screen with a 320 px display. Nest is RoHS compliant and free of arsenic, mercury, and PVC.

COMPATIBILITY
Nest is compatible with forced air, radiant, heat pump, oil, gas, and electric systems; one or two stage conventional heating; one stage conventional cooling; one stage heat pumps with auxiliary heat or two stage heat pumps without auxiliary heat; 24-volt systems. Nest doesn’t support conventional two-stage cooling or heat pumps with two-stage heating and auxiliary heat.

National Grid installs ground mounted Solar Array

We are always keeping our eye out for renewable energy being installed around the city, and recently posted about the new Wind Turbine on the North Shore. Not wanting to leave out the South Shore, here is a picture taken while we were on 93 a couple of days ago. The painted LG tank is a landmark for everyone, and we can now use it to describe the location of a HUGE solar array. It does not seem like they are finished either. From the looks of the new footings poured and the line of forms this array may double in size over the next month. Keep your eye out and we will update when we see progress.

Bring on the WIND

Boston has a new wind turbine just outside the city !

On Friday, the 16th of September, I caught a glimpse of some of the components of this turbine. This is what was there on Sunday.

This means that the North Shore now has 3 wind turbines just outside the city limits : 2 active and 1 dormant. Rt. 99, Everett at the MWRA facility has the newest; Medford has the next active one just off 93. The last is located in Chelsea at Forbes Park and is not in operation as far as I know.

It’s encouraging to see that we are spreading our wings wide when it comes to renewable energy.

BGB Honored with Donation by the Arbor Day Foundation

To celebrate our choice of eco-friendly capital, Greentech Lease Finance has recently made a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation  for ten trees to be planted on our behalf. Greentech is a financial services company focused exclusively on providing access to capital for manufacturers, distributors,  and buyers of renewable energy equipment and technology. The ten Jack Pine trees that were donated will be planted in the Huron Manistee National Forests in Lower Michigan.

We are very excited about this and thank Greentech Lease Finance and Arbor Day Foundation for the contribution!

Energy Efficient Condos in Dorchester

Joseph Todaro of Green Bean Development LLC had a vision to convert a two and a half story house on 73 Sawyer Ave. on Jones Hill in Dorchester to energy efficient condos, which would be 60 – 70 % more efficient than their counterparts. BGB are the general contractors for this project, and worked with the company and RODE Architects of the South End to breathe new life into this 1890 home and complete a deep energy retrofit.

The rehabilitated home will have all the features of the Queen Anne style building restored, along with the necessary energy efficiency measures to make it energy efficient.

We are excited that the  project is expected to be completed soon.

BGB Featured in Natural Awakenings

Brian Butler and Boston Green Building have recently been featured in the September issue of Natural Awakenings, a healthy living magazine here in Middlesex County, detailing our DER program that can help homeowners get subsidies for super-insulating their homes.

The Deep Energy Retrofit Program, sponsored by National Grid, allows consumers to receive a 75-percent reimbursement of qualifying energy-related upgrades, with a cap of $35,000 to $42,000, (depending upon square footage). Multi-family subsidies range from $50,000 to $106,000.

According to Brian Butler, BGB owner, “Lower heating bills are just the beginning. Higher property value, air quality, and greater recognition as a superior home are the biggest upshot for participants. “

We are looking forward to an exciting fall, we’ll keep you posted on what we are doing !
